recognized half the cast which was surprising to me since i don't know enough musicals to recognize that many actors. ethan slater as the balladeer is fun but also hard to take seriously he just sounds like spongebob 🧍 eek but other than that i was delighted with this version, esp the instrumentals they sounded so nice !!!! was especially delighted to hear brandon uranowitz and wesley taylor, whom im very fond of

musical bootleg watch - september 17, 2026
watched most of this on the bus so i understood like half of it at first but i had fun yay. i learned things !!! fascinating stuff !!!! couldn't say much that hasn't been said before, like yeah yeah peak american musical. a really fitting musical for me to get into while taking a class on american history that emphasizes american myths like the american dream and how these myths inform how americans interpret their history...
my fave is czolgosz. his ballad goes hard. the framing device of it being a carnival game is also just so awesome. got chills at multiple points, especially after oswald shoots jfk (predicted that the balladeer would end up being oswald btw. because im cool like that). shoutout sondheim !!! the goat !!!!

documentary watch - september 16, 2026
watched at a free screening at my school as part of a film festival. it was bad i didnt like it. maybe it's just me but it felt impossible to follow, incoherent, like the experts were really wishy washy, asked to speak their piece without a greater vision for what the documentary as a whole wanted to say. the way it seemed to assume deeper knowledge of haitian history in the audience which doesn't seem like the best practice as a doc intended for general audiences, but what do i know. it's a shame since they acknowledge that the subject of déjoie isn't the most studied, but they really didn't contribute much to my understanding. alas
