i find this one is lacking that very entertainingly-written ensemble with which the other two knives outs’ humour thrives—this time around everyone’s just kind of miserable and bounce off of each other less so it’s less fun, though i get that’s probably the intentional different tone they chose for the story. still of course it’s a great film, josh oconnor carries, and that message that even blanc has to swallow of having grace really sits in such a profound way with me, as someone who relates most with blanc’s position as a starkly nonbelieving outsider (im wondering if id have enjoyed it more if i felt more connection to christianity but idk). gee i wish we had an app to post a gif of jeremy renner’s body thudding down the stairs

you know what at so many parts of this i sobbed very hard. i was gonna make a joke but you know what i gotta say it fully. you go through the film holding your breath. watch as marta stays silent as this family of rich white assholes debate her family’s rights, as they ignore her, as they acknowledge her only when it benefits them, as each and every one of them turns on her. THEY DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT COUNTRY HER FAMILY CAME FROM. you watch a woman who’s held her breath for so long to protect herself from a group of horrible people who’ll descend on her the moment they no longer perceive her as safe, just trying to keep her head above the water all while still always choosing good and choosing kindness. and you watch as she gets everything she deserves. because of that good. because of that kindness !
