this was recommended to me on youtube, like how the original avpm was recommended to me all those years ago, and i decided i'd take the next three hours to watch it to feel something. i don't know any portuguese lol but i'm familiar enough with the avp trilogy to get what everyone was doing and saying. that being said, what a fever dream ??? it's the plot of avpm but they took songs and scenes from sequel and senior year because they just liked them so much. harry sings the wizard and i from wicked. Hello.
not that i'm complaining, i really loved a lot of the creative direction. the flashback sequence of ron meeting harry for the first time and then jumping through the platform being a silent sequence set to ragtime piano was really fun. i'm really happy with their decision to give guys like potter to belatriz because the og avp trilogy underused britney coleman as bellatrix soso much it's unreal. the little change in the melody in i'm just a sidekick feels really, really nice. i checked the og musicals to see if the « hermione granger is a feminist icon who shouldnt be woken up by a kiss » joke is original and it IS.
this take on granger danger broke my heartttttt. there's a huge emphasis on how for the first time, hermione is getting so much positive attention not only from rony and draco but from everyone. the arrangement makes the song sound like it's straight out of a movie soundtrack, this uplifting and exciting moment definitely not for rony and draco but for hermione. it's HER moment. everyone takes turns to dance with hermione. people are blowing bubbles. her dances with hagrid and then harry at the end especially make me so emotional it's unfair.
eek and the actors were all so excellent. joceli guedes as snape takes inspiration from joe moses but also just serves unfathomable camp. but this production takes after starkid in how the one who steals the show is the actor who portrayed gina(ny), marta monaretto.
my verdict is that it's really beautiful and also makes me sad to think that a bunch of hp fans came together to make this happen just one(1) year before jkr went mask off as a bigot. oops. and also everyone has to get more into brazil. i am not in a chinese period of my life i am in a BRAZILIAN period of my life WAHOO

i did NOT remember the nerdy prudes music going this hard oh my goodness. will branner as max has a great voice. lautski is a starkid couple of all time, every beat of their story hits so hard. the three song stretch of if i loved you, the summoning, and cool as i think i am reprise might be the strongest of all the starkid i've ever heard. « if i loved you like you should be loved / loved you more than the stars above » makes me fucking insane

i remembered very little from this one going in, but WOW what an incredible musical. black friday is an ensemble show and not every single part of it spoke to me equally, but when it hits it hits Hard. i teared up multiple times throughout. lex is definitely my favourite, califorMIA blew me away with how it conveys how lex and ethan are naive and stupid and dumb kids, believing that being young and in love makes them good and righteous and will save them. (it is unfortunate it's tied to ethan's actor...) the show stopper for me is what if tomorrow comes, always always always. it still gives me chills to this day.

the Sound of tgwdlm isn't actually my favourite and i don't have much nostalgia for the hatchetfield musicals. i Think this one is one i'd have to rewatch to rediscover the magic again, bc i DO know and remember tgwdlm as truly fantastic but i wasn't getting it from my relisten here. except of course, at let it out and inevitable. jon matteson is a national treasure and the finale of the show feels like someone dropping rocks on your head with how well tgwdlm WORKS and how it all comes together masterfully oh my god... again not a Lot of nostalgia for the show but the character of paul matthews feels like an old friend.

music goes WAY too dummy for a script this silly. WHAT were they cooking. rogues are we is basically a collection of the most itch-scratching sounds possible to me specifically, the highlights being denise donovan as cat woman's "we are the harlots and the hussies", meredith stepien as riddler's "riddle me this i have a puzzle that'll put you to tears", and who can forget jim povolo as mr freeze's « GIDDY UP GOTHAM » and then catwoman again « GIDDY UP UP UP ». i had the song on loop on the plane from rome to zurich like SERIOUSLY what did they put in that thang. apparently i taught myself some of the choreo to this show because even when i have basically no recollection of learning it, whenever the synths come on during dynamic duet i get the urge to start doing that fuck ass kick. hmb somehow also manages to also compel me greatly. i was shocked at the american way, like damn i did not remember its satire being so sharp. oh man and dark sad lonely knight's punchlines just keep on coming while also being such a good i want song ??? i remember hmb also being a fave but since when is it this good ???? « i wanna be your friend forever / i wanna be a modern dancer / what a super weird thing to say that came out of nowhere » is a starkid lyric of all time TO ME

i relistened to tonight this school is mine for the first time in years and was slapped in the face with the direct les mis confrontation parody ?????? really funny bc it was starkid that was the direct reason i got into les mis. senior year is kind of the wild card of the trilogy because it's the one in which darren criss was the least involved (he doesn't appear in the cast recording unfortunately :( though clark baxtresser's voice is also very lovely) and it was only performed once at the staged reading at leakycon. i remember this one being another musical favourite and heck yeah i agree with younger me yet again. almost every song hits really hard. special shoutouts go to wizard of the year which was in my head all the damn time when i was a kid and is still really funny, i'm just a sidekick which was one of my favourites of all time at some point, and everything ends which is still Gorgeous.

avpm is really really special. it holds a special place in my heart as the very first musical i got into and thus my gateway into the medium, and is also one of the crucial stepping stones that led me to fandom spaces. i would not be here if not for avpm. this website would not exist without avpm. i cannot emphasize enough how special it is.
as for the content of the show itself : i have all the musical numbers memorized down to a t. back in the fifth grade my best friend and i would run around the track as i taught her the entirety of goin back to hogwarts and i could probably do that again today. i don't think the original avpm's music as a whole is as catchy as sequel or senior year, but man do those standouts stand out. back to hogwarts of course, but granger danger and to dance again and not alone OF COURSE. oh man. jaime lynn beatty you have my heart. i also have rather the soft spot for brian rosenthal as quirrell. speaking of. quirrellmort still goes hard. sorry.
