FEATURED INTEREST THAT YOU SHOULD TALK TO ME ABOUT : BETWEEN THE LINES !!!!

At first, I... was honestly a bit of a hater of the musical my high school had chosen to do for my 12th grade year, Between the Lines, because the basic premise—a coming of age fantasy romance of a girl who finds solace in escaping into her favourite book which then becomes more real—was on paper the same as my favourite musical at the time, Alice By Heart. And ABH had also recently been released for licensing !! We could've done one of my favourite musicals for my senior year, and instead, we had... this obscure show that no one had heard of before.

But upon listening to the cast recording, I decided that I liked it. It was fun and charming and sometimes quite beautiful and compelling (though also sometimes kind of cringe and perplexing) and I was genuinely excited to see it live, though in my head I still referred to it as "discount ABH" despite how different in story and tone it turned out to actually be. Then came the night of the show I watched. I sat beside two of my friends during closing night. And...

I cried during most of the second act.

The cast recording, as much as I'm fond of it, does not show how good this musical is. By intermission, I was in shock at how much I loved almost every part of it. I'm sure a part of it was because my school had basically the greatest theatre program in the city, our shows always being excelllent; the unique joy of watching your very talented friends onstage absolutely killing it didn't hurt either. But I was and I still am convinced that it wasn't just the magic of live theatre and my school's awesomeness; Between the Lines as a show really is that good. It's a perfectly delightful story and experience with themes of existentialism, escapism and the nature of storytelling and fiction—some of my favourite topics to explore. I'm constantly in awe of all the different choices made to contribute to these themes and its core messages of taking control of your life despite your circumstances and having the will to do so because of the people, experiences, and stories in your life you love the most.

I'm also adamant that it's an extremely queercoded story (there are already several canonically queer characters in the text, including the major character Jules) even if unintentionally. This is a story about feeling out of place and not knowing where you fit in and wanting to leave this place and finding comfort in stories of places far away from you, after all.

It seems like every time I think about Between the Lines, I get lost in all the connections and analysis I can make, and honestly, it just makes me so happy. To my greatest misfortune, it still is a pretty obscure show that not many people in my online spaces know about, and even though my whole irl friend group knows and loves it because, well, half of them were in it, but they aren't as passionate (deeply obsessed and unwell) about it as I am. So at this point, I'm kind of on my own ? Many of my friends do listen to me yap about it, but no one yet really matches my level of enjoyment, and it does make me sad, but I soldier on. I now even have a dedicated Tumblr side blog (lesbianfrump) as an outlet.

Long story short, if you ask me about Between the Lines I will probably be very very happy.
