malloytonight and accessibility
One very persistent issue throughout the web revival movement, as well as in most other online spaces, is the lack of accessibility. From the bright flashing images of the retro 90s-2000s aesthetics many old web adherents are trying to replicate, to the DIY inexperience of new webmasters creating pages that are unresponsive and unnavigable, to many other different issues that make the old web unusable
I myself am almost entirely self-taught and would not consider myself an expert in making websites by any means, but I do know that I want to make the effort to make my site as accessible as I can. This page serves as a list of steps that I am trying to take and a to-do list of steps to take in the future ; furthermore, this page holds me accountable.
Current undertaking :
making it so all JavaScript elements on my site are usable with a keyboard ! (august 26, 2025)
Future things to-do
- Add alt text to all images.
- Add an option to freeze blinkies (or have them frozen by default !)
- Use semantic elements (header, nav, section, footer, etc)—will probably be part of the major style revamp I'm planning.
- Readability, contrast, spacing : also part of the major style revamp, I'll make sure all text has high contrast with the background and the fonts are readable.
