Argie's a nickname for her last name Arguelles, but I haven't decided on a first name yet. In the wake of the Philippine-American War, she and her younger brother Antonio immigrated from Pasig to San Francisco as labourers. Antonio later fell in love with a white woman, Madaline, and since anti-miscegenation laws prevented them from marrying in California, they moved to Toronto where some of Madaline's cousins live. They've been in Canada for six years.
Argie's an up-and-coming journalist, an annoying Louise Cherry type, but a little more self aware, and much more distrustful of the cops. Unlike Louise Cherry, she knows it's okay to be a lesbian (LMAO). What she DOESN'T know quite yet is the extent of genderfuckery she can truly engage in. She dresses masc (having tried sharing clothes with her brother when they first moved to North America and gained the taste for them) and her pen name is ambiguous to the point of provoking tension with Louise whose journalistic identity and reputation are very heavily impacted by her status as a woman. But Argie isn't exactly using the name and clothes as a disguise or costume... they're just a part of her. Maybe she finds queer community in Toronto at some point.
The more I think about it the funner it is to say that she and Louise are engaged in some form of toxic yuri. They aren't compatible by any means (Argie is aro as all representations of me must be and sex is a big part of her relationships in this sense, while Louise is THE sex averse ace and also incredibly repressed) but they piss each other off homoerotically anyways. does this count as yumeship. chat i like effie more than louise (as well as effie x louise as a couple) but the plot potential here is crazy

Coming up with a character representing myself in Murdoch Mysteries is SUPER interesting. I never really thought to do it before until another person in the Murdoch Mysteries server shared their own Murdochsona. I mean, 1900s Toronto isn't a speculative escapism-type setting, it's real. One, I am Canadian and I don't live in Toronto so making an OC tied to myself that does live in Toronto is a really funny concept to me. Two, one thing I've pondered a lot as a first gen immigrant, having moved with my family when I was a baby, is how I have very little roots here in Canada. We're one of the fastest growing minority populations currently, but there were not a lot of Filipinos in the country in the time of Murdoch Mysteries, the big waves only coming a few decades later. That's not to say there weren't any, of course, but still, it makes me think a little harder about the context of my existence and the existence of this character.
And this isn't a bad thing by any means ! Tracing the story of a Filipino-Canadian in the context of the period Murdoch Mysteries is my exact kind of history nerdassery, and I think this aspect of the character conception only ties Argie even closer to me. Her route is way, way different than my own, but Argie's hometown is the city where I was born.
